Vanitas had its renaissance in the 17th century, when Dutch artists became focused on the theme of mortality using natural specimens such as flowers cut from the root and starting to wither, or pieces of decaying fruit to express a memento mori – a reminder of the inevitability of death in all things living. Moreover, “precious” metals, and objets d’art were used to remind the audience of the meaninglessness of a superficial existence.
Here the artist further explores these themes through the introduction of water; acting as both nurturer and destroyer, it has the power to cleanse and reinvent, or to drown and disappear. Believing that drawing on water’s transient and destructive nature exposes the fragility of life, and the temporary nature of our existence. Ultimately, by playing upon and transforming the genre’s inherent symbolic themes; here the 'Vanitas' series act as a reflection on life and mortality, questioning it's meaning in a society dominated by materialism.

The Legacy Collection
Catalogue Raisonné of works by artist of Alexander James Hamilton b.1967. available for rights managed stock image licensing.
The Legacy Collection is an unparalleled rights managed archive documenting over four decades of artistic practice. A lifelong exploration of chiaroscuro, Vanitas, and the Dutch Masters. My sculptural compositions are constructed and photographed entirely underwater, where light itself becomes my medium. Through this process, I achieve a painterly execution reminiscent of Caravaggio’s tenebrism, rich in depth and contrast, with an almost ethereal luminosity.
By submerging both subject and scene, I dissolve the boundaries between materiality and impermanence, echoing the fleeting motifs of 17th-century still life while grounding my work firmly in contemporary practice.
Created mostly with large-format analogue photography, these works result from an entirely in-camera process without digital manipulation. Each frame is a singular study of form, liquid mechanics, light and shadow that carry a painterly aesthetic unlike any photography collection. Beyond its historical significance and aesthetics, The Legacy Collection serves as an enduring resource.
Proceeds from licensing directly support the studio foundation and global artist residency program, ensuring that future generations of practitioners continue to engage with sustainable and experimental methodologies.visit the gallery www.DistilEnnui.com
